The Australian Cattle Dog: Inducted into the AKC in 1980
AKA..Blue Heeler, Red Heeler, ACD, Halls Heeler, Queensland Heeler.

This breed originated in Australia as a cross between a Smooth Blue Merle Collie and a Dingo. The Dalmatian was later added, which is where the unusual spots come from and puppies are born white then get spots later. Bull Terrier was also added but later bred out, but in some cases you can still see a slightly egg shaped head.

There is also some debate about whether the Kelpie contributed to the breed or not. This breed gets its name from the way it nips the cattle's heels to get them moving. The heeler is a tireless worker who loves to do his job. They are intelligent dogs, and are loyal to their families. There are a number of stories of these dogs facing danger to their lives in order to protect their family. Heelers are relatively healthy and can be active. They need to have something to do or they will become bored. When bored they can be very destructive. They excel at obedience, agility and the work they had been bred for, herding.

For more information on the heeler go to the AKC website and look under herding or http://www.dogbreedinfo.com
